MOTHERLAND

A TOTE BAG BY PRANAYA

*    *    *

In the early 1980s, Pranaya's mother and Jakarta's most active dance company embarked on an international tour with goals to popularize the beauty, ethos and prominence of Indonesia's dance traditions. The photographs of her mother's travels have become a huge source of inspiration for the artist, as they share a glimpse of a cultural identity rarely recognized by popular media.

"I wanted to create a bag that represents my mother, my heritage and my roots as an artist. But I also wanted to create a bag that tells a story of the future" -Pranaya Soeraadiningrat

ORIGIN STORY

Inspired by the past, present and future icons of Indonesia, the 'Motherland' tote bag is an exploration of the country's rich artistic heritage. Exploding with color, in detail and spirit, the design includes the name of a future city and highlights the powerful women of this archipelago region.

Made as an homage to the artist's mother, whose remarkable career as an artist among playwrights, designers and dancers tells the story of the key, but under-recognized, figures of Indonesian history.

Featuring a collage with illustrations pulled from vintage research books, the 'Motherland' tote bag aims to embody the beauty and greatness of women in Indonesia. Take a closer look at the bag and artwork below.
